Rehoming a Pet
Our number one priority is to keep pets in their existing home where possible. However, we understand there are times when things don’t go to plan and sometimes circumstances outside of your control may lead you to make the heartbreaking decision to re-home your beloved pet.
Prior to Surrender:
Before you make the final decision to surrender your animal please consider the alternative options for support that are available to you.
If you are experiencing hardship we may be able to provide you with support so that you can avoid rehoming your pet. Please read about our outreach program here.
Your pet may be struggling to cope and as a result is displaying undesirable behaviours. If this is the case, we recommend seeking support from a qualified, force-free behaviour trainer. You can access these services here.
Process of Surrender:
If you have exhausted the alternatives and the best decision for your pet is to surrender them then please follow the steps below:
Step 1: Complete a questionnaire
The first step is to complete a questionnaire online. The form will take between 30 – 60 minutes to complete and will provide us with the information we need to determine how we can best assist you and your pet. We strongly encourage you to provide as much detail as possible so that we can ensure that your pet has the best chance at success.
Step 2: Phone consultation
If after we review your questionnaire and we are in a position to assist you and your pet, then someone from our team will contact you to discuss the circumstances and your pets’ needs in more detail.
Step 3: Behaviour assessment (dog only)
A behaviour assessment is necessary so that we can ensure, to the best of our ability, that your pet is placed in the most appropriate environment.
You will be required to take your dog to one of our preferred, force-free, animal behaviourists for an in person behaviour assessment located within Metro Melbourne.
Step 4: Veterinary check
A veterinary health check of your pet is necessary so that we have a current and accurate understanding of your pets health status.
You will be required to bring your pet to one of our preferred veterinarians for an in person health check located within Metro Melbourne.
Step 5: Handover
If we are in a position to welcome your pet into our care then we will proceed to secure a suitable foster home for them. Every animal is different and comes with their own unique set of circumstances, for this reason we are unable to provide you will a specific timeline on how long this may take.
Please note, while we will do our best to assist you and your pet, we are unable to guarantee their placement within our foster program.
Once your pet has been surrendered into our care, for privacy reasons we are unable to disclose information pertaining to their foster and adoptive home.
